From July 13th to October 6th, 2024, the Grottaglie Ceramics Museum will host ceramics works from around the globe, offering the opportunity to express visions of the Mediterranean through unique and innovative creations.
Now in its thirty-first edition, the “Mediterraneo” Contemporary Ceramics Competition has firmly established itself as a prestigious international event celebrating the excellence of contemporary ceramic art. Organized by the Municipal Administration of Grottaglie the exhibition will showcase works rich in history, culture, and tradition, inviting visitors on a fascinating artistic journey through the Mediterranean.
The work Recommended actions has been shortlisted to take part in the exhibition. It draws inspiration from 18th-century water transport devices that prevented buckets from hitting the knees. These devices serve as a metaphor for the transportation of water, which is a fundamental element in all cosmetics. However, in this piece, water is absent and replaced by another omnipresent element from our daily lives—light. The perforations on the surfaces of the pieces allow light to fill them symbolically. This substitution emphasizes the significance of light in shaping our perception of the surrounding environment.
The incorporation of light serves as a symbolic representation of the hope that resides within each container, a hope that is generated and sustained by the consumer. Additionally, there is a satin ribbon with a list of recommended actions prescribed by the manufacturers of these specific ointments. These instructions, often presented in small and difficult-to-read text, resemble stippling akin to Morse code. This encryption-like effect demands prior knowledge and understanding, shifting the focus from reading to decoding.
The participation has been sponsored by Ramon Llull Institute.
