Body poetry (The substance II) is one of the shortlisted works in the present edition of the International Ceramics Triennial UNICUM 2026.

The central theme of the 6th edition of the triennial is sustainability, with a particular emphasis on the use of environmentally responsible materials and techniques. The selected works promote innovation while raising questions about the role of art in a time of environmental and social change. The exhibition was curated by Irene Biolchini, Danijela Pivašević, and Alenka Gregorič, who selected 89 works by 91 artists from 33 countries from a total of 406 projects submitted by 255 participants representing 47 countries.

The exhibited works explore the formal, technological, and conceptual possibilities of ceramics within contemporary art. Broadly speaking, they can be understood as formal and visual investigations, experiments with new technological approaches, or uses of ceramics as a medium for critically addressing contemporary sociopolitical issues. The artists develop their own technological and aesthetic approaches while engaging with environmental crises and raising both universal and intimate questions about human existence. The selection reveals the diversity of contemporary ceramic art, united by a high level of technical refinement and an innovative exploration of new expressive possibilities.

UNICUM functions as a platform connecting Slovenian and international art scenes, offering an in-depth insight into contemporary ceramic production and the diversity of artistic practices. At the same time, it highlights the National Museum of Slovenia’s rich permanent ceramic collection, which demonstrates the enduring relationship between humans and clay from prehistory to the present day. The triennial thus creates a space for reflecting on the historical, social, and aesthetic dimensions of ceramics, reaffirming that its contemporary significance can best be understood through a dialogue between tradition and innovation.

The exhibition will be on view until October 15.

Ramon Llull Institute has sponsored the participation.
