Mariya Alipieva is a multidisciplinary artist born in Bulgaria in 1981, living and working in Spain since 2003. After graduating with a degree in Animation at Art College Sofia (Bulgaria), she moved to Mallorca to study a Higher Level Education Cycle in Artistic Ceramics at Art and Design High School of Palma de Mallorca. She also holds a BA in Fine Arts and an MA in Artistic Production and Research from the University of Barcelona.
Her projects explore the intimate relationship between individuals and their environment. Her artistic production delves into the elements that surround us and how we shape ourselves to conform to the standards imposed by contemporary society. Through her work, she invites the public to reflect on the acts and rituals ingrained in the first-world lifestyle, which are often closely related to constant concern for physical appearance and social status.
Her work has been featured in contemporary art fairs and exhibitions in Spain, Italy, the United Kingdom, Germany, Slovenia, Latvia, the United States, Australia, China, Taiwan and South Korea. In recent years, she has been recognized for her work, including winning the 12th Biennial of Ceramics in Vendrell (Spain, 2022), being a finalist in the 4th Latvia Ceramics Biennale Martinsons Award (Latvia, 2023), the Third Blanc de Chine International Ceramic Art Award (China, 2023), the 16th International Biennial of Ceramic Art of Aveiro (Portugal, 2023), the 5th International Ceramics Triennial UNICUM (Slovenia, 2023), the 41st International Ceramics Competition of Alcora (Spain, 2022), the 15th International Ceramics Biennial in Manises (Manises, 2022), having a Solo Exhibition Project selected for the New Taipei City Yingee Ceramic Museum in 2023 (Taiwan, 2021), receiving a grant for Exhibition Production and Artistic Training in Visual Arts (Menorca Island Council, 2021), and receiving an Honorable Mention in the Korean Ceramic Biennale (Korea, 2021).
Her work is part of private collections and public institutions, such as PATRIM University of Barcelona (Faculty of Fine Arts), Collection of Artist’s Books of the University of Valencia (Faculty of Fine Arts), Collection of Artist’s Books of the University of the Library of the University of Barcelona (Faculty of Fine Arts), Contemporary Art Collection of the Vendrell City Council (El Vendrell, Spain) and Art Collection of Shangyu Museum (Shaoxing, China).
